Slow movement (9/17) thru (9/30)
One of many sand dunes on Lake Michigan |
We were up early to do some much needed boat cleaning. John handled the outside while I had galley and our berth to deal with. Wasn't to bad because we keep up the maintenance.
The next morning we were on our way to St. Joseph's some 56 miles away.Arriving at West Basin Marina in St. Joseph's around 4:30 we went to Planks Tavern about 1 mile away. It was a cool night for the walk back to the boat. The next day John discovered that a trim tab was leaking fluid, so he had to clamp it off. He needs to get a new one.
After dinner we went to the beach to watch the sunset.
The next day we traveled 26 miles to Michigan City, Indiana. There were some packages that needed to be picked up. We rented a car to do some much needed shopping. Doing most of our walking for supplies every time we stop somewhere,it was a big relief to drive instead of walking a long distance.
CALM |
Rain and wind was with us for three days here. The wind did a number on our flag. Rocked and rolled all the while we were here, for 5 days.
MEAN |
MEANER |
The sixth day was to head to Chicago, which we achieved in 41 miles. Wind was a major problem in the mooring field. After 4 tries and a missing boat stick, we finally got hooked.
Visited the water fountain, the bean, and the flower gardens here by the marina. Walked back to the harbor where the water taxi took us back to our boat. 2nd day: Off to see the Field Museum full of impressive collection of animals and birds. It took up most of our day because the museum is that big. $10 dollars each took us by water taxi back to the Navy Pier, where we had a bite to eat before a nice stroll back to the boat. Every Wednesdays and Saturdays they set off fireworks from barges. They did not disappoint, for the sky was lit up for a very long time.
FIREWORKS |
Day three in Chicago was a walk to do some sightseeing were we found a place called Mariano's for lunch. This store is three floors of everything people could need. Walking we found a park just for children. It was delightful to see them playing and laughing. Back to the boat to watch my 49ers play Packers. Day 4 here had us seeing the
Aquarium, with all the aquatic life that is in our world. Later in the evening we walked to town,to find the
Museum of Illusions, which was having us use our brains to solve quite a few problems that we would not think of.
Day 5 and on our way to the Chicago Science and Industry by driver because it was way to far to travel by foot.
NOTICE Both characters are masked |
I visited the new Marvels exhibit here. Comic books that date back to 1939 to present time. Seen some interesting things about the marvel characters.
Also viewed the train setup about the local history. John visited the rooms that interested him.
Nancy getting creative |
Science is always a good way to go. The museum closed at 4pm, so we didn't get to view all the things that we wanted to see
LEAVING CHICAGO
Chicago Lock |
First of the many lift bridges we did not need to open Notice the sailboat. They are waiting for the biannual bridge opening. |
Some 42 miles and we were on the wall in Joliet,IL We were pleased to see Drifter was there. We have run into Randy and Anita from time to time on our travels. Always nice to see them. While John was having docktails with them, I went to the casino near by for some personnel time. The next day we went to Walgreens for some ice and drinks,1and 1/2 miles away. Did some walking lately. We went to Juliet's Bar & Grill for some beers and appetizers, their pretzels were delicious. On the way back we stopped in the casino and had some fun.
